Hollow core slabs are precast, prestressed concrete elements that are generally used for flooring. Some of their advantages are as follows:
Factory produced by automatic extrusion
Hollow core slabs are precast in the factory on 125 long beds using an automatic extruder, combining high output, low manpower and superior quality products.
Rapid construction
Hollow core slabs are cut to fit the job before leaving the factory, thus allowing simple fast erection on site. Shorter time schedules reduce risk, cut finance costs and provide a income producing building sooner.
Immediate work desk
Hollow core slabs provide an immediate solid work deck for other trades. After grouting the shear keys, the slabs can support construction loads upto full design capacity of the floor.
No formwork or Probbing
Expensive formwork and temporary props are eliminated, giving free uncluttered space with vastly improved access within the work site.
Reduced on site labour
Only a small erection crew is required to install as much as 600 square meters per day. The time of tradesmen on site is kept to a minimum.
Efficient light weight section
The hollow core and prestressing impact a lightness and strength to the slabs which reduce the dead load on the floor. The depth of the floor and strand pattern can be varied at minimum cost to suit the span and load requirements.
Design flexibility
Hollow core slabs are compatible with most building materials including masonry, concrete and steel. Slabs can accommodate most building requirements including openings, angles and cantilevers.
Durability
Concrete quality meets the durability requirements of the most stringent standards. Strand cover may be varied to suit particular exposure classifications.
Long Span
Hollow core slabs can accommodate long spans, resulting in flexible open space with fewer beams, walls and supporting columns. Clear spans of up to 18m can be obtained economically.
High load capacity
Hollow core slabs can handle the heavy loads required in most factory, warehouse and storage buildings without increasing floor depths or adding multitudes of beams and columns.
Fire resistance
Fire resistance periods up to 240 minutes (4 hours) can e provided to meet building code requirements.
Sound insulation
The low sound transmission property of hollow core floors reduces the amount of noise transmitted through floors and ceilings. Sound Transmission Class ratings as specified in building codes can be met for a variety of occupancies.
Prefinished ceilings
Exposed hollow core soffits can be painted directly or spray coated to provide attractive ceilings. Alternatively ceiling tiles can be applied directly or suspended ceiling simply installed.
Service cores
Longitudinal core holes in floor slabs can e used as service ducts for concealed service such as plumping, electrical and telephone cable. Breakouts can be drilled as required.
A hollowcore slab is a precast, prestressed concrete member with continuous voids provided to reduce weight and create a strong and efficient structural section. As a side benefit, the voids can be used as concealed electrical or mechanical runs.
The slabs have continuous cores running through them, the primary purpose of these cores being to decrease the weight and material within the floor, yet maintain maximal strength. To further increase the strength, the slabs are reinforced with 1/2” steel strand, running longitudinally.
Primarily used as floor or roof deck systems, hollow core slabs can also serve as wall panels, spandrel members, seating units or bridge deck slabs.
Above all, factory-produced automatically on 125m long beds, hollow core slabs offer an attractive and economical alternative to conventional in-situ slabs, and as such have been gaining an ever growing position in the UAE market over the past few years.
Building systems using hollow core slabs have proven to be effective in residential buildings, schools, hospitals, offices, car parks, multipurpose centers and-villas.
The underside can be used as a finished ceiling as installed, by painting, or by applying an acoustical spray.
Hollow Core Slabs are readily adaptable to low, medium or high-rise buildings.
Hollow core is a product of choice in buildings which require sound barriers between floors, and also provides excellent fire resistance and heat insulation, making it a natural for hotels, Schools, Parking and upscale complexes. Use of hollow core products enhances speed of construction.
Continuous voids in the hollow core slabs provide reduced weight, and therefore, cost, and also the possibility for concealed electrical or mechanical runs.
Currently we offer a range of Six slab depths; 150, 200, 265, 320, 400, 450 and 500 millimetre slabs. Depending on the project requirements, in particular span and loading performance, Gulf Precast design department will propose the most adequate and economical slab thickness in your project.
Gulf Precast Hollow core slabs are produced at our factories in Mussafah and Dubai under rigid quality control conditions, and then shipped to the job site for incorporation into the structure as part of a proven efficient and fast method of construction.
